The European Society of International Law (ESIL) Interest Group ‘The EU as a Global Actor’ (IG EUGLOBAL) organises a side event on 11 September 2025 (Thursday) in the framework of the 2025 ESIL Annual Conference hosted by Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.

The focus of the ESIL Annual Conference 2025 is centred on reconstructing international law. Over the last decade, international law has gone through a period of turbulence, challenging longheld convictions and assumed certainties. This year’s ESIL Annual Conference will address the notion of how international law may be “reconstructed” in a holistic manner, addressing its institutional, normative, historical as well as theoretical dimensions.

The IG EUGLOBAL will expound on this topic even further by questioning the EU’s place and role in crafting and (re-)constructing international law. This workshop will zoom in on the legal arsenal that the EU (at times together its Member States) resort to when it comes to building (new) international law, legal regimes, or custom. Thus, we are particularly interested to receive submissions on interrelated questions – including, but not limited to, the following:

• Is it possible to identify a genuine EU approach towards (re-)constructing international law, i.e. can we carve out discernible legal methodologies, techniques, patterns, or practices to which the EU resorts when it takes part in international negotiations and law-creating processes?
• What are the characteristic (legal) instruments that the EU employs in the process of (re-) constructing international law? What is exemplary of its legal-technical inventory? And in what ways are these instruments constitutive of a unique EU approach towards (re-) constructing international law?
• What are the main EU actors that (re-)construct international law? What actors take part in the process of negotiations and law-creation, also beyond the European institutions? How and to what extend does the EU have an impact on the formulation of international law also beyond formal(ized) processes?
• EU’s attempts to reconstruct international law seen from the outside: not always a rosy picture? ‘European exceptionalism’, claims for specialness/uniqueness and other tendencies – what is the take of the rest of the world?

The IG EUGLOBAL invites submissions of abstracts, written in English or French, of no more than 600 words. Applications should be submitted to euglobalactor@gmail.com by 10 April 2025 (Thursday) 24:00h CEST, with a short curriculum vitae containing the author’s name, institutional affiliation, contact information, and whether the applicant is an ESIL member. Selected speakers will be notified by the end of April 2025 via e-mail.

The Scientific Committee of the International Conference “The crossroad of international environmental law: Paradoxes of energy transition and global inequalities” invites contributions that explore the complex intersection of energy transition, environmental law, and human rights. We seek papers that critically examine the tensions, challenges, and potential synergies arising from the global shift to renewable energy, with a focus on the environmental, social, and economic impacts of this transition, particularly in the Global South.

Possible topics to be addressed:

● “Just transition”: Balancing economic growth, social justice, and environmental protection in the Global South.
● Neocolonialism in the energy transition: Exploitation of resources in the Global South.
● Impact of renewable energy projects on human rights in the Global South.

Submission guidelines

I. ABSTRACT SUBMISSION:

The deadline for abstract submission is April 10, 2025. Abstracts may be submitted via e- mail to the following email addresses: ielconference@uoc.edu. Please include the following information, in separate documents:

● Document 1:  Anonymized abstract (500-700-word).

● Document 2: Authors’ information:

o Name, affiliation and contact details (e-mail and phone number). 

o Title of the abstract.

o A short CV, including a list of relevant publications, if applicable.

Both senior and junior scholars are invited to participate in the call for papers. Multiple abstracts can be submitted, but only one abstract per author will be accepted. 

The Europa Institute (Leiden University) and the Asser Institute are organising a joint workshop on 'A Legal Assessment of (EU) Integration in the Western Balkans', on 31 October 2025, in The Hague.

For this workshop, academics are invited to submit 600 word paper proposals on the following three themes:

1. Stabilisation and Association Agreements (SAAs) and enlargement;
2. The legal dimension of (economic) cooperation in the region; and
3. A view from the Western Balkan countries. 

The workshop will explore regional integration processes in the Western Balkans against the backdrop of EU accession efforts. It will examine how various initiatives - including the Central European Free Trade Agreement, Berlin Process, and common Regional Market - interact with the EU enlargement framework. 

Prof. Adam Lazowski (Professor at the Westminster Law School and European Neighbourhood Chair Coordinator & Visiting Professor at the College of Europe (Natolin)) will deliver the keynote address. 

The organisers particularly welcome papers examining whether these multiple integration paths facilitate or hinder the ultimate goal of EU accession. The call comes as geopolitical shifts, including Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine, have renewed focus on the strategic importance of Western Balkan integration into European structures. 

Interested academics should submit abstracts of up to 600 words and a brief CV to the organisers by 1 May 2025. Selected participants will be notified by 16 May and expected to deliver full papers by 1 October 2025. 

The workshop is intended to lay groundwork for publication either as an edited volume or special journal issue focusing on legal and economic integration. Limited financial support for travel and accommodation is available for qualifying participants.

Az ELTE ÁJK Kari Tanácsa 2025. március 11-i ülésén egyhangúlag támogatta az elmúlt kilenc évben oktatási és tanulmányi ügyekért felelős dékánhelyettesi pozíciót betöltő, Somssich Réka egyetemi tanár dékánná választását. Az új dékán 2025. július elsején lép hivatalba, mandátuma három évre szól. 

Somssich Réka jogi tanulmányai megkezdése óta folyamatosan kötődik az ELTE Állam- és Jogtudományi Karhoz, 2001 óta tanít a Nemzetközi Magánjogi és Európai Gazdasági Jogi Tanszéken, fő kutatási területe az Európai Uniós jogharmonizáció. 2016-ban habilitált az ELTE-n, egyetemi tanári kinevezését 2019-ben vehette át.

Közigazgatási tapasztalatot 1997 és 2010 között az Igazságügyi Minisztériumban szerzett az Európai Uniós Jogi Főosztály munkatársaként, majd főosztályvezetőjeként. Angolul, franciául és németül felsőfokon beszél, külföldi egyetemek rendszeres vendégelőadója.  2017-ben jelent meg önálló monográfiája Egységes jog – egységes értelmezés? címmel, amely a tagállami bíróságok Európai Unió Bíróságának megkeresése nélküli, az uniós jogra vonatkozó önálló értelmezési tevékenységét vizsgálja.

Több kitüntetés birtokosa: 2017-ben megkapta az igazságügyi miniszter által adományozható Moór Gyula-díjat az európai uniós jog magyar nyelvi változatának és magyar terminológiájának kialakítása terén végzett munkájáért, valamint a nemzetközi magánjog és az Európai Unió gazdasági jogának területén végzett kiemelkedő színvonalú oktatói és kutatói tevékenysége elismeréseként. 2020-ban lett a Francia Köztársaság miniszterelnöke által, a francia kultúra terjesztéséért adományozható Akadémiai Pálmarend lovagi fokozatának kitüntetettje.

Der Kurs zeigt zunächst die primärrechtlichen Grundlagen des europäischen Arbeitsrechts auf. Anschließend sollen die wichtigsten Felder einfacher europäischer Gesetzgebung im Arbeitsrecht beleuchtet werden. Dabei bilden im Individualarbeitsrecht die sog. Antidiskriminierungsrichtlinien einen gewissen Schwerpunkt; im kollektiven Arbeitsrecht steht die Beteiligung der Arbeitnehmer an unternehmerischen Entscheidungen im Vordergrund. Abschließend gilt es, die Perspektiven des europäischen Arbeitsrechts aufzuzeigen. Ziele des Kurses in diesem Teil: Die Teilnehmer sollen einen Überblick über die Grundlagen und die wichtigsten Felder des europäischen Arbeitsrechts gewinnen. In ausgewählten Materien geht es darüber hinaus auch um vertiefte Kenntnisse und ein erhöhtes Problembewusstsein. Auf diesen Feldern ist deshalb auch Einblick in die maßgebliche Judikatur des EuGH zu gewinnen.

Ismét vendégelőadást tart Peter A. Windel az ELTE Állam- és Jogtudományi Karán. Másodszor látogat karunkra a Ruhr Universität Bochum virtuóz polgári jogász és polgári eljárásjogász professzora, egykori dékánja, számos kínai, tajvani és japán egyetem vendégprofesszora. Angol nyelvű, nyilvános vendégelőadására Torts Hopping címmel kerül sor. Vendégelőadónk „esetről esetre ugrálva” mutatja be a kártérítési jog sokszínűségét; s azt, ahogy e jogterület mögött felsejlik a sűrített valóság jogi és jogon túli színskálája. Választ keres mindennek pszichológiai hátterére: miért nem vagyunk hajlandóak elfogadni, ha valamilyen sorscsapás ér bennünket, s miért keresünk és akarunk minden áron felelőst találni? Mi az oka, hogy számos valós tragédia mellett sokan a pénzszerzés könnyű lehetőségét vélik felfedezni valamilyen őket ért káreseményben, érdeksérelemben, s ezért még gátlástalanul hazudni is készek a tárgyalóteremben. A vendég szavaival: a hallgatóságot egy „tragikomikus kaleidoszkóp” várja.

The green and digital twin transition agenda was launched by the European Union in 2019. The ultimate goal is to achieve zero net carbon emissions by 2050, by which the EU strives to become the first climate-neutral continent. Successfully implementing the agenda requires intellectual creativity as well as the sharing of ideas and possible solutions to the challenge. In fact, vivid scientific and professional debates are being conducted about the issue EU-wide, while the EU and its member states are also taking numerous steps towards reaching the defined objectives.

The conference addresses the main topic along three main tracks: EkonBiz - Economic and business aspects of the green and digital transition, LegPOL - Legal aspects of the green and digital transition, as well as Humanities - Societal and human aspects of the green and digital transition.
